# What 254,000+ door and window warranty work orders show

Every figure on this page comes from work manufacturers and distributors actually sent UTS ServicePros — which components fail, how often a claim needs an inspection before anyone can decide the remedy, and where the work happens. It is published as evidence, not as a claim, and the method is at the bottom of the page.

## Key findings

- Insulating glass and glazing appear in 33% of 246,000+ door and window warranty work orders (2008–2026), more than any other component; frames, jambs, mulls and grilles are next at 21%.

- 29% of those 246,000+ work orders, nearly three in ten, asked for an inspection or diagnosis rather than a defined repair.

- When a warranty repair needed a part shipped from the manufacturer, the homeowner waited a median of 12 days for it (middle half 7 to 19 days), and 8% waited more than 30 days (93,000+ work orders, 2008–2026).

- In the West, insulating glass and glazing appear in 46% of warranty work orders, 1.9 times the Northeast's 24% (218,000+ work orders, 2008–2023).

- In the Northeast, frames, jambs, mulls and grilles appear in 28% of work orders and warped or delaminated door slabs in 26%, against 15% and 12% in the West (218,000+ work orders, 2008–2023).

What fails

## Door and window warranty work, ranked by component

The share of the 246,000+ work orders with a written request that name each component, 2008–2026 . Insulating glass is in 33% of them — 1.6 times the next category. A work order can name more than one component, so the column does not add to 100.

What it means for a warranty program

## Three things the record says that a brochure would not

### Glass decides the program

With glass in 33% of work orders, a service partner is mostly judged on glass: measuring the unit correctly the first time, getting the replacement to the right address, and fitting it in the existing sash and frame. A second trip for a mis-sized unit is the most expensive mistake in the category, and it is the one the record says will come up most.

### Nearly three in ten claims start with a question

29% of work orders asked for an inspection or diagnosis rather than a defined repair. On those visits the deliverable is not a fix, it is the evidence the manufacturer's warranty decision rests on — every issue found, installation faults measured and photographed, and no promise made to the homeowner about the remedy.

### Most work is a component, not a unit

Sash, hardware, weatherstripping, rollers, balances and operators together make up most of what is not glass. Each is a part replaced with the manufacturer's own part, which is faster, cheaper and far less disruptive for the homeowner than replacing the whole door or window. See [the component-level repair scope](https://utsservicepros.com/services/repairs).

Parts

## Parts: how often and how long

Many warranty repairs cannot start until the manufacturer ships a part. How often that happens, and how long the homeowner waits for the part to arrive, shapes the homeowner’s experience of the warranty as much as the repair itself does.

Of work orders needed a manufacturer parts order (2008–2023) 54% Of work orders needed a manufacturer parts order (2008–2023) Median wait for a shipped part, middle half 7–19 days (2008–2026) 12 days Median wait for a shipped part, middle half 7–19 days (2008–2026) Of homeowners waited more than 30 days for the part (2008–2026) 8% Of homeowners waited more than 30 days for the part (2008–2026)

### How often a part is needed

Share of 218,000+ work orders with a written request that needed a manufacturer parts order, 2008–2023 . Work orders that began with an inspection needed one 23 % of the time.

- Insulating glass and glazing 68%

- Frames, jambs, mulls and grilles 54%

- Locks, latches, hinges and handles 49%

- Door slabs 46%

- Weatherstripping, sills and leaks 41%

- Adjustment and operation 39%

### How long the homeowner waits for it

Median days from the work order being opened to the manufacturer’s estimated parts arrival, for parts that had to ship, 2008–2023 .

- Window sash 13 days

- Insulating glass and glazing 12 days

- Door slabs 12 days

- Locks, latches, hinges and handles 10 days

- Weatherstripping, sills and leaks 9 days

- Frames, jambs, mulls and grilles 8 days

What the wait measures. The manufacturer’s parts lead time as the homeowner experiences it: the days from the work order being opened to the manufacturer’s estimated arrival of the part, across 93,000+ work orders where a part had to ship. It is not the time UTS ServicePros takes to do the work, and parts already on hand are not counted.

By region · 2008–2023

## The failure mix changes with the region

Glass dominates in the West. In the Northeast, frames and warped or delaminated door slabs carry far more of the work. Shares of the 218,000+ work orders with a written request from 2008–2023 , by US Census region.

| Region | Insulating glass and glazing | Frames, jambs, mulls and grilles | Door slabs | Weatherstripping, sills and leaks | Locks, latches, hinges and handles | Window sash |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| West | 46% | 15% | 12% | 8% | 12% | 10% |
| South | 28% | 19% | 20% | 16% | 11% | 6% |
| Midwest | 29% | 24% | 18% | 18% | 12% | 10% |
| Northeast | 24% | 28% | 26% | 18% | 12% | 6% |

A work order can name several components, so rows do not add to 100. Regions are the US Census Bureau’s; the District of Columbia is in the South.

Questions

## What the record answers

### What is the most common door and window warranty repair?

Insulating glass. Of the 246,000+ door and window work orders with a written request that UTS ServicePros received between January 2008 to September 2026, 33% named glass or glazing work — failed or broken insulating glass units, reglazing, fogged or cracked panes. Frames, jambs, mulls and grilles were next at 21%, then door slabs at 18%.

### How often does a warranty claim need an inspection before a repair?

Nearly three in ten. 29% of the work orders in the UTS field record asked for an inspection, diagnosis or assessment rather than, or before, a defined repair. That is the visit where the manufacturer's warranty decision gets made, which is why UTS inspection reports cover every issue found with the product and record installation faults with measurements and photographs.

### Which door components fail most often under warranty?

Across the whole record, door slabs that had warped, bowed or delaminated appeared in 18% of work orders, weatherstripping, sills and leaks in 15%, and locks, latches, hinges and handles in 12%. Most of that is component-level work: a failed part is replaced with the manufacturer's own part rather than the whole unit being swapped.

### Do door and window warranty failures differ by region?

Yes, sharply. In 218,000+ work orders from 2008–2023, insulating glass and glazing appeared in 46% of work orders in the West but 24% in the Northeast. The Northeast ran the other way: frames, jambs, mulls and grilles appeared in 28% of its work orders, and warped or delaminated door slabs in 26%, against 15% and 12% in the West. Regions follow the US Census Bureau definitions.

### How often does a warranty repair need a part from the manufacturer?

About half the time. 54% of the 218,000+ work orders with a written request from 2008–2023 needed a parts order. Glass work needed one most often, at 68%, then frames, jambs, mulls and grilles at 54% and locks, latches, hinges and handles at 49%. Work orders that started with an inspection needed parts only 23% of the time.

### How long do homeowners wait for warranty replacement parts?

A median of 12 days. Across 93,000+ work orders from 2008–2026 where a part had to ship, the time from the work order being opened to the manufacturer's estimated parts arrival had a middle half of 7 to 19 days, and 8% of homeowners waited more than 30 days. Sash parts took longest (median 13 days, 2008–2023). This is the manufacturer's parts lead time as the homeowner experiences it, not the time UTS takes to do the work, and parts already on hand are not counted.

### Where does door and window warranty work happen?

Everywhere a manufacturer ships. The record covers all 48 of the lower 48 states plus the District of Columbia, Alaska and Hawaii, and 10 Canadian provinces. The South carried the largest share at 34% of US work orders, and the five busiest states were California, Texas, New York, Florida and Pennsylvania.

### How was this data produced?

From UTS's own work order systems: the legacy system's records from January 2008 to July 2023 and the current system's from then to September 2026, combined and deduplicated by work order ID — 254,000+ work orders, with test entries removed. The 246,000+ that carry a written request were classified by keywords in that request. One work order can name several components and some name none of the categories, so the shares do not add to 100. No figure is reported by manufacturer, by year or in dollars, and no homeowner, contractor or pricing information is published.

### How much warranty work has UTS ServicePros completed?

More than 126,000 door and window jobs completed between 2014 and October 2025, for 75+ manufacturer, distributor, builder and retail accounts, with branches counted under their parent company. The work reached 16,400+ ZIP codes in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 10 Canadian provinces. Jobs closed without work performed are not counted. That is a narrower measure than the 254,000+ work orders in the field record, which counts every work order opened since 2008, including those closed without work.

### What share of warranty field work is repair versus inspection?

Across every job completed since 2014, 62% were repairs dispatched with a defined scope, 19% were inspections only, and 10% were inspect-and-repair visits where the contractor diagnosed the failure and fixed it on the same trip. The remaining 9% were installs, projects and other field service. Roughly three jobs in ten involved an inspection.

## Method and limits

Source. Every door and window work order opened in UTS’s work order systems between January 2008 to September 2026 : the legacy system’s records through 2023 and the current system’s since, combined and deduplicated by work order ID — 254,000+ after test entries were removed. It includes out-of-warranty work that manufacturers referred to UTS. Totals are shown as rounded-down floors.

By region. The regional mix is measured on the legacy system’s 218,000+ work orders with a written request, 2008–2023 , by the homeowner’s state or province. The current system’s records are not yet included in that breakdown.

Classification. The 246,000+ work orders that carry a written request were each assigned to component categories by keywords in the request the manufacturer wrote. That is a heuristic, not a diagnosis: a request may mention a component that turned out not to be the fault, one work order can fall into several categories, and some fall into none (inspection-only visits, returns and display installs among them). Shares are rounded to the nearest whole percent.

The longer record. The 2014 – October 2025 figures come from a separate export of completed work orders, which carries the job type but not the request text, so it has no component ranking. Jobs closed without work performed are excluded. Totals are shown as rounded-down floors, reach is counted in 5-digit US ZIP codes, and accounts roll branches up to their parent company.

What is not here. No figure is reported by manufacturer, by year or in dollars, and nothing identifies a homeowner, an address or a contractor. Manufacturer and location counts roll branches up to their parent company.
